About Chemical Peels

Young skin is able to slough off and renew easily to show healthy, radiant skin. Older skin takes more time to naturally slough off, so chemical peels speed up the process. By removing the top layers of skin, a chemical peel reveals fresher, brighter skin. At Bella Lago Aesthetics in Tahoe/Truckee, California several types of chemical peels in different strengths are offered to match the patient's needs and wants. The Northeastern California MedSpa location of Charles P. Virden, MD plastic surgery office, the skilled aestheticians of Bella Lago use chemical peels to help patients treat signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles) and environmental damage (discolorations, scars, sun damage). Some of the peels offered at Bella Lago Aesthetics are:

  • Glyocolic acid
  • Lactic acid
  • Salicylic acid
  • Illuminze Peel
  • Vitalize Peel
  • Rejuvenize Peel
  • VI Peel
  • VI Precision Peel

Best Candidates

Chemical peels produce the best results for patients with mild to moderate skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, discoloration, scars, sun damage, rough skin texture, dry skin, dull skin on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

What to Expect

There are several types of chemical peels offered by our office. The strength used will be determined based on the skin condition of the patient, as well as the aesthetic goals and desired downtime. Our office offers the following peels:

Glycolic Acid
A potent glycolic acid peel that increases cell renewal, and refines texture for all skin types.

Lactic Acid
A lactic acid peel that hydrates, controls melanin production, and stimulates cell renewal. This peel is ideal for dry, sensitized, and discolored skin conditions.

Salicylic Acid
A salicylic acid peel that purifies acne conditions and controls oil production in the skin. This treatment is also gentle enough for resurfacing environmentally damaged skin.

Illuminize Peel
This noninvasive, very superficial chemical peel utilizes a newer generation of alpha-hydroxy acids in combination with salicylic acid to maximize skin rejuvenating effects with low irritation. The Illuminize Peel increases skin glow and radiance, tightens the skin, and improves clarity, color, and skin texture. Patients achieve enhancement of skin appearance with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Vitalize Peel
The Vitalize Peel uses a blend of salicylic acid, resorcinol, lactic acid, panthenol, and retinoic acid. Vitalize Peel helps fight the effects of time, sun damage, and environmental assaults. This powerful, yet non-damaging peel can take years off aging skin. The Vitalize Peel is effective for various skin conditions, such as acne, pigmentation abnormalities, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and photodamage.

Rejuvenize Peel
Rejuvenize Peel is a blend of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and the addition of .3% retinoic Acid. Rejuvenize Peel produces a moderate amount of peeling for 2 – 5 days, and can be repeated every 4 – 6 weeks. It is effective for skin with sun damage, melasma, pigment changes and acne scarring.

VI Peel
The VI Peel contains a synergistic blend of powerful ingredients suitable for all skin types. This is a mid-grade strength peel similar to the Rejuvenize Peel. The VI Peel provides dramatic results with virtually no pain, no skin preparation, and little downtime. Why wait weeks or months for results? Enjoy radiant, younger looking skin in about a week with the VI Peel.

VI Precision Peel
The VI Precision Peel contains a higher concentration of the same synergistic blend of ingredients found in the VI Peel. The Precision Peel is an excellent addition for addressing stubborn hyper pigmentation including melasma, actinic keratosis and age spots on the face, hands, arms, or chest.

Other Considerations

Regardless of the peel used, the overall procedure is similar. The skin will be cleansed thoroughly and the chemical solution will be applied to the face. During a light peel, the skin will tingle during treatment. A medium peel will produce a bit more discomfort, and a deep peel will require a numbing agent or anesthesia. The differences between the peels are the type of solution used, the number of steps taken during the actual procedure, as well as the amount of solution that is applied. A soothing ointment will be applied to the skin after the treatment. In the days that follow, the skin will begin to naturally flake and peel away. Patients should avoid picking at the skin or trying to speed up the peeling process in any way because this can result in scarring. Patients should avoid sun exposure and keep their skin protected at all times.
